Our Walking Tours takes the philosophy of our bike tours out of the saddle and onto the pavement of the capital, giving every visitor a hands-on experience of Chilean culture and history.
If you're looking for a standard tour led by an umbrella-carrying guide who dictates facts and dates and helps you point your camera in the right direction...then you've come to the wrong place. Our Walking Tours, using an extensive and unique set of routes, gives you the chance to learn about Chile by experiencing Chile through its sights, sounds and flavors.
We are so confident you will be pleased with any of the walking tours that we have a 100% satisfaction guarantee.
Currently La Bicicleta Verde offers the following spectacular walking tours:
Before we describe the tour, let’s try defining Guachaca or Huachaca (pronounced WA-CHA-KA):
Guachans are Chileans who characteristically shy away from any formal definition of who they are, but could perhaps be described as a social movement that promotes humble living and simple pleasures.
They also champion the lifestyle of urban Chile’s “common people.” Their motto is “Humilde, Cariñosos y Republicanos” (humble, affectionate, people for the Republic). They oppose class discrimination, all things “cuico” (posh, upper-class, pretentious) and the privileged classes´ focus on foreign culture.
The STGO HUACHACA Tour gives life to the Guachaca belief through Santiago´s local cuisine. Our guides take you to the most authentic and traditional places that the guide books don’t even know about on a gustatory tour through street markets, unique coffee houses and back-street bars.
We introduce you to the most traditional Chilean food such as sopaipillas (what´s this)and mote con huesillos (what´s this). We also discover Chile´s famous leg-shaking drink, Terremoto (earthquake)., which almost brought even Antony Bourdain to his knees.
This tour guarantees to introduce you to the real Chile and its people. Of course, we are not talking about supermarkets and tourist bars, but rather the biggest street and tent markets in Santiago along with the most traditional yet secret, 'cueca' bar "La Piojera"(what´s this?). You will come across weathered vendors shouting out their best prices on avocados, strawberries, tomatoes, eels, sea bass, octopus and much more.
Ah! the coffe is in a Café con Piernas.... (Coffe with legs)
Your experience includes:
Exploring the unique Patronato neighborhood filled with traditional Korean and Middle Eastern restaurants and shops. On to La Vega fruit and vegetable market, tasting sopaipillas or mote con huesillos, and Fresh Juice (Depends on the season)
Exploring the center of Santiago with stops at the Central Seafood Market to see what the great Chilean Pacific coast has to offer; Plaza de Armas Square for some rich Chilean history, a “coffee with legs” coffee house (where the view is more interesting than the coffee). Finally, stopping in La Piojera to feel the power of the Terremoto.
For those looking to keep your legs on solid ground, we can substitute the Terremoto for a milder drink like jote or Fanschop. There is also a non-alcoholic, yet still unique, fresh juice available.
